“Digital Days and Candlelit Nights” is the theme of English 333, Jane Austen in Context. Students in the course are exploring an eighteenth century learning method–the creation of a commonplace book (a kind of intellectual scrapbook)– using Tumblr, a twenty-first century social blogging website. Students collect web research, discover contextual information about Regency culture, and participate in the modern cult of Austen by regularly updating their dedicated Tumblr blogs. The students then evaluate each other’s blogs, after having collaboratively built a rubric. The course is led by Andrea Rehn, Associate Professor of English.
