What are Creative Commons Licenses, and why should we use them?
In order to facilitate a collaborative spirit while protecting your authorship, DigLibArts recommends that you choose one of the following types of Creative Commons licenses for all work you share online. Click links for more information:
Attribution 3.0 Unported: Allows both sharing and also commercial use.
Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported: Allows sharing but not commercial use.
Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported: Allows both sharing and commercial use, as long as same license terms are applied to derivative works.
Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported: Allow sharing as long as same license terms are applied to derivative works. Does not allow commercial reuse.
Of these, the one considered the most “free” is Attribution 3.0 Unported. However, this license allows for the possibility of a derivative work being closed off from further use and development by others. For that reason, we strongly encourage recipients of grant funding to choose either the Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license or the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license.
Creative Commons provides very user-friendly descriptions of its purpose and licenses. Please visit their site for complete information.
